Mark Lancaster has praised the council for publishing all its expenditure – and encouraged others to follow suit.
During Prime Minister's Questions today (Wednesday), the city MP highlighted that Milton Keynes Council now publishes all its receipts over £500, asking what was being done to ensure that all local authorities do the same.
David Cameron responded that the country was seeing transparency from almost every single council, pointing the finger at one which has failed to do so.
It is the only way of ensuring money is going on services, not salaries and bureaucracy, Mr Cameron said.
Afterwards Mr Lancaster added: "I am delighted that the Government has been able to effect this change so quickly. It is right that councils publish their receipts – after all, this is residents' money, they have a right to know how it is being spent. This and other Coalition measures signify a move towards a fairer, more efficient politics. I am glad Milton Keynes has led the way in this."
